William B. Overstreet Jr. – fighter pilot, storyteller, and quiet hero – flew with the 363rd Fighter Squadron of the 357th Fighter Group during World War II. Best known for his daring flight under the Eiffel Tower, chasing a German Messerschmitt Bf-109, Overstreet became a symbol of light for the people of Paris. His audacity that day, facing enemy fighters above and flak batteries below, cemented his place as a legend.
This book illuminates Overstreet’s childhood, aerial combat experiences, and post-war legacy with striking richness. Using archival records, Bill’s own oral testimony, never seen photos, and family archives, we experience the war from the cockpit of his P-51 “Berlin Express”. Alongside him, we meet the men he flew with and the losses he endured, like Edward Simpson, Jr., one of his best friends, Chuck Yeager and Bud Anderson,. Overstreet bridged the gap between the past and the generations to follow, ensuring his lessons would live on long after his death. His commitment to remembrance of the 357th Fighter Group was as strong as his courage was in the skies over Europe.
