As the 80th Anniversary of D-Day approaches, are you researching and writing the stories of your WWII veterans? If the answer is no, why not? Some of the reasons I hear from people as to why they do not write include:
- I am not a writer.
- I don’t have enough information.
- I’m not done researching (are we ever?)
- I wouldn’t know where to begin.
- I wouldn’t know what to include.
- How can I make it something people will want to read?
One of the biggest tips I can give someone who is interested in writing their veteran stories is…….start with what you have and build your story around that information.
Quite honestly, we are never finished researching so why wait until that magical day appears when we’ve seen all the available records, photos, and have heard all the family stories before we start writing? Use what you have and create the story from there. When you do this, it will help you form better questions; open new research paths; help you discover more about WHO your veteran was and perhaps why you are who you are.
When I wrote my book Stories of the Lost, I used the information I had on each of my four veterans. All their service files burned but I still wrote their stories. They are each unique, which is what our stories should be, rather than cookie cutter reads.
Have I discovered new information since then? Of course! Would I write the stories and book differently today? Yes! Especially since I have also traveled Europe and been to some of the places where my ancestors fought and died. Does knowing I may not have all the details about my grandpa’s WWII Navy service stop me from writing his book this year? No.
