The #1 question you should ask a professional military researcher, a Certified or Accredited Genealogist, professional genealogist or museum BEFORE you hire them for research is….
If the service file burned, what records will you use to reconstruct my veteran’s service and tell me what units he/she was in and where he/she was?

If the researcher cannot answer this question and only responds that if the records burned, nothing can be done – go find a different researcher.
Military research is a specialized area of the genealogical and history research world. I don’t care if someone has initials after their name because they have a genealogy certification or accreditation, or a Ph.D. – if you don’t understand what to do if the records burned, the potential client should be referred to someone who knows and can do the work.
Ask the question and save yourself time and money when doing military research from World War I – Vietnam. I’ve seen all too often in social media groups and new clients who tell me they hired someone they thought knew what they were doing, only to discover they had no idea how to actually find answers if the records burned.
